A Mothers Day Gift - Grandma Teddy

A Mothers Day Gift - A Tribute to my Grandmother. my Grandmother, from what I can remember was an incredible person. She passed away when I was eleven years old and although some of my memories have faded, others remain strong. My main memories are of her in the kitchen, making cookies and I would like to publish one of the, without-a-doubt, best Oatmeal Raisin Cookie recipes I have ever had. These would be a great part of some Mothers Day Gift ideas as well sent along with some Mothers Day Flowers.

First I would like to share a little about this strong women with you . . . a little history makes these cookies taste even better and they pack well into a Mothers Day Gift Basket for a very happy Mothers Day.

It upsets me that I know so little about my grandmother's life. One of my favorite stories was one she told about her family's pony "Sugar". When she was a little girl living in Nova Scotia, Canada, they would hook Sugar up to the cart and head into town to get flour and other staples at the local store. There was a small sweet shop at the beginning of town and Sugar would go right up to the front of that store and not move until someone would go inside and get her a lump of sugar - then, and only then, could they continue on their way.

I called her Grandma Teddy (I was the only one of all her grandchildren who did) because she had a dog named Teddy and for some reason, the dog is how I associated to her.

My mother told me many other stories about my grandmother as I became an adult. Her brothers were killed during World War I and when she was young, on the eve of her wedding, her fiance dove into a shallow pond and never came back up. These are just a few of Helen Wilson's, my Grandma Teddy's, life experiences that made her strong.

Oatmeal Raisin Cookie Recipe-Happy Mothers Day

I would like to share this Oatmeal Raisin Cookie recipe with you - please think of her when you enjoy these wonderful tasting cookies and they make a wonderful homemade Mothers Day Gift. For some reason the Metal Bowl and the Wooden Spoon make all the difference in the world as to how these cookies come out.

Cream Together in a METAL BOWL:

  • 34/ Cup Shortening
  • 1 Cup Brown Sugar
  • 1/2 Cup Granulated Sugar
  • 1 Egg
  • 1/4 Cup Water
  • 1 tsp. Real Vanilla

Now using a WOODEN SPOON to add:

  • 1 Cup Flour
  • 1 tsp. Salt
  • 1/2 tsp. Baking Soda
  • 3 Cups Rolled Oats
  • 1/2 Cup Raisins (you can add more if you like)

Drop by the spoonful onto an "Air Bake" (these cookie sheets work the best when baking cookies) or a greased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 Degrees for 12-15 minutes (remove from oven before they get too brown - they will look a little undercooked but they are not).
